DCL REVIEWS

Cutup Mixdown voted best local album by HK Magazine [December 2001]:

While this year's batch of local music was mainly defined by either angst-filled teen punk bands or formulaic pop, one thing stood out amongst the rest: Cut Up Mix Down. "Cut-up" by two digital DJ's from the Digital Cutup Lounge, the double CD put together the live jazz of local pianist Allen Youngblood with a diverse assortment of MP3's creating an album that was just as praised for its dance sensibilities as it was for its virtuoso jazz.

MP3s from this site reviewed in Sept 2001 issue of URB Magazine [Los Angeles] by Rob Geary:

Digital Cutup Lounge is John von Seggern and Stephen Ives, two DJs living in Hong Kong who are attempting to bring a radical art manifesto sensibility to the new art of laptop MP3 DJing. Their page offers writing excerpts, the occasional picks list and a generous helping of audio in the form of DCL live sets and remixes. The highlight of their live set from Hong Kong's Sonic Circuits VIII festival is "Jun'n'Bass," where 18 minutes of digital beat science get wrapped around contributions from a live guitarist, drummer and more.

CD REVIEW [Joyce Hor-Chung Lau in HK Magazine, 13 July 2001]

Digital Cutup Lounge's unique debut is the most exciting thing to hit the Asian music industry in years...

listen.com review of DCL MP3.com CD hong kong cutup [Noah Enelow for listen.com]

Fusing focused guitar explorations, roiling basslines, and virtuosic yet groove-centric drum programming, Digital Cutup Lounge's partially improvised, yet well-structured pieces contain both the wail and drone of choice Free Improvisation and the visceral rhythms and powerful transitions of Drum 'n' Bass.

It's moody, restless music, a seamless fusion of the electronic underground with the jazz avant-garde.

ENTERING THE NEW WORLD OF MUSIC [Paul Spendlove in the Hong Kong iMail, 28 July 2000]

It's a live music concept that takes some getting used to: two guys hovering over their laptops, clicking MP3s into activity and mixing them together, DJ-style. But fans of Digital Cutup Lounge don't seem to mind the duo's rather static performance. Of course, it probably helps that laptoppers Stephen Ives and John von Seggern are joined on stage by various local jazz musicians, including pianist Allen Youngblood and trumpeter Mark Henderson, who improvise skillfully over their electronic soundscapes. But judging from Digital Cutup's sold-out show last Thursday at the Jazz Club, Hong Kong music fans are clearly embracing this brave new musical world. After working together for less than a year, Ives, an IT industry veteran, and von Seggern, a professional bassist and music grad student at HKU, have made a name for themselves as digital DJs, representing a very new, Internet-spawned musical movement.

SLICING AND DICING [Vikki Chow in HK Magazine, 14 July 2000]

Down at the Jazz Club and Bar, John and Stephen are getting ready to concoct another digital music experiment... To kick things off we hear voice-overs and what appears to be a radio news announcement in a foreign language. Then, with a click of a mouse, high-powered beats blare out of the speakers... Soon enough, the band begins to synchronize and the dizzying beats and ambient sounds break through...
